Hearst taxes could go up by two per cent

Municipal taxes in Hearst might be going up again. Chief Administrative Officer Yves Morrissette says even though its early you can expect as much as a two per cent increase. He adds that fixing up roads are a big issue.

“We have a back log of about $4.3 million per year in infrastructure such as fixing our roads,” he said. “We need to concentrate our efforts on the capital section and just renewing that infrastructure.”

He adds that council has to decide whether they will stay around their bench mark increase of a two per cent.

“so far the property values itself increased municipal revenues by 3.5 per cent this year,” he said. “It’s going to be up to council whether they increase taxes by zero, one or two per cent increase.”

Preliminary review of the budget begins later this week and it’s hoped that a final budget would be ready by mid-March.
