Little Long Generating Station Project creating 120 construction jobs

Preliminary Construction is underway at the Little Long Generating Station located about an hour north of Kapusksaing. Ontario Power Generation gave Town Council an update on the project on Tuesday night that will see four sluice gates added at the Little Long spillway at Adam Creek, which is not a hydro dam but a diversion dam. Project Support Manager Sue Rapin says the work is important to the dam and Adam Creek.

“This is a legal requirement that we are meeting, and it will help in the event of an extreme larger flood,” Rapin said. “It’s important to take care of that in case something like that should happen.”

Rapin says this is the first major project on the hydro dams in quite some time.

“The lower Mattagami River Project was done in 2010 onward and that was a very large project,” she said. “This is the next big one. We do projects quite often at these facilities with replacement work and repairs.”

OPG Officials along with the construction company Kiewit were in Kapuskasing on Tuesday afternoon for public information sessions on the project. Approximately 120 jobs will be created with construction expected to be completed in 2023. Little Long is part of the Mattagami Four Generation Stations that include Smokey Falls, Harmon, and Kipling.
