Kapuskasing getting high marks for recycling

It appears the Model Town of the North is a good recycling community. Manager of Public Works Eric Cote says we have been able to keep the contamination of the recyclable items at the acceptable levels of about 15 percent.

We pay a surcharge for a higher contamination rate,” he said. “But we are doing very, very well and send out about 15-17 tons of recyclables to our partner every week which is great for a municipality like ours.”

Cote says there are still some simple things to keep that standard and to assist town crews when picking up your contents.

“Make sure your containers are spread out by at least three feet,” he said. “The truck has clamps on them that pick up the containers.”

He says one of the biggest myths is that the trash is mixed together in the truck. Cote adds that’s not the case and there are two separate compartments for recycling and for regular trash.
