Town Insurance Rates going up by 17.7 percent in 2020

Sticker shock! That’s the reaction from Town of Kapuskasing officials over the recent hike of municipal insurance rates of 17.7 per cent or about $70,000.  Administrator Guylain Baril says that rate was much higher before their insurance company was able to reduce it. He adds there have been more claims made in 2019 that have forced the rates to go up across the province.

“The insurance company says its a trend right now,” he said. “We have looked at some neighbouring municipalities and they are all going up too.”

Hearst and Smooth Rock Falls have seen its insurance rates climb to 13 and 12 per cent, respectively.

Barill says The town will have to keep those rates for the first half 2020.

“We are not please with that at all. We understand what they are going through and the process,” he said. “We are going to do our do-diligence and look at some other options to see if we can get them back to the 2019 rates.”
