A new summer celebration for Kapuskasing replaces Lumberjack Festival

There will be a new celebration in Kapuskasing next summer. The Recreation Committee will recommend to Town Council that the Lumberjack Festival come to an end, but a new event be organized to take its place. Councilor Sebastian Lessard says it was getting difficult to put on the festival.

“We were having a hard time finding sponsors and government grants,” he said. “There was also an issue looking for volunteers. The Lumberjack Festival has put us on the map in the last 20 years and that’s tremendous. The whole format has seen it’s better days and it’s time to find something new and refreshing.”

Lessard says there was great discussion among the members regarding the type of event they could have.

“We know we have certain things that work well and that people really appreciate,” he said. “Maybe we can put the celebration in a new location. Our Circle area is excellent and a great destination that maybe has to be used more.”

The new event would be much smaller than the larger Lumberjack Festival. Although, there isn’t a new date set yet, committee members were also discussing the addition of a second venue of the Circle along with the current Riverside Park.
