CT-Scan to open in Kapuskasing next week

You soon won’t have to travel out of town to get a CT Scan. Sensenbrenner Hospital in Kapuskasing is set to start using its CT Scan next week, joining Hearst Hospital as two facilities providing the service in our area. Sensenbrenner Hospital Board of Directors Chairman Gary Fortin says it’s an exciting time for not only the board but for people in the area.

“It’s been a very long and difficult process,” said Fortin. “We have had to jump through various hoops and there has been a change in the provincial government. It is very exciting because it means less travel for our patients to travel elsewhere for the scans. It will be safer so they are not on the roadways, and of course the speed of care will increase.”

Fortin says the Board would spent up an extensive amount of money in transportation costs of moving patients to other facilities for scans.

“We use to spend between $300,000 and $400,000 in transportation costs that we couldn’t budget for,” he said. “That money came right off the top and 90 per cent of it was to transport patients. Now we will be able to use that money to operate the system.”

Most of the fundraising to purchase the equipment was done in about a year, and Fortin says that one private donor from Cochrane was able to put them over the top of their goal needed.
