Changes coming to Heritage Lumberjack Festival

The big July Festival that has become a signature in Kapuskasing might be taking a year off. A recreation committee meeting will recommend to council whether the Heritage Lumberjack Festival returns next summer or takes a break. Councillor Julien Boucher says they want to make sure the staff and the committee have the time necessary for the more important 100th birthday.

“We want the committee to put lots of energy on 2021 so it will depend on if there is any extra time for an event in 2020,” he said. “That will influence the decision a lot.”

The Committee will also decide whether the name Heritage Lumberjack Festival should be changed.

“In the last couple of years the festival has changed with activities such as the inflatables and the carnival,” he said. “If people hear lumberjack in the advertising they don’t know that events have changed.”

Boucher says they have not been able to get any government grants for the Lumberjack Festival like they use to. He adds a name change could help them find those new grant streams.

Town Administrator Guylain Baril says in the past they had lots of lumberjack events including the professional tour making a stop in town. Some residents left the festival early because there no lumberjack activities as advertised in the name.
