Carol Hughes to run for House Speaker in Parliament

A local member of parliament is our region wants to be Speaker of the House. Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes is one of four other MPs interested in the post when parliament resumes on December 5th. Hughes, who was the Deputy Speaker during the last parliament session, says it would be a honour to take over in the post.

It would be a privilege to have someone from our riding as speaker of the house,” she said. “I have certainly appreciated the words of support and comments, of duties I was entrusted to do as Deputy Speaker Of The House.”

She says she wants to carry on the work she started as Deputy Speaker during the last parliament.

“I want to be part of that solution and help move the agenda forward,” she Hughes said. “It will be interesting to see how much different things will be in Parliament with a minority government in place.”

Current House Speaker Geoff Regan will let his name stand along with Conservative MP Bruce Stanton, and Liberal Anthony Rota. Hughes along with Stanton and Rota served as Deputy Speakers.
