New swimming pool comes in at $22.7 million

Sticker shock! That might be the reaction you have this morning when you learned about what it will cost to build the new swimming pool. Town Council was told last night that a new pool will cost $22.7 million with Kapuskasing on the hook for nearly $6 million of the total. That portion of the pool is something the town already has in its bank account.

Town Administrator Guylain Baril says several years ago they look at building a much smaller pool with a cost of nearly $8 million. He adds the new figure includes the rise of construction costs, contingency plans, as well as a much larger facility that includes a big leisure pool.

Kapuskasing Mayor Dave Plourde supports the proposed cost of the pool and noted that for too long that this community always found ways to fit construction projects within the budget requirements, even if it meant not getting everything done at once.

“It’s council’s decision to proceed with the pool at $22.7 million, and the cost is still much less than what was proposed to built a pool several years ago,” he said.

Councillor Sebastian Lessard says he is okay with that cost and added that the new pool is a game changer.

“It’s great the services that a new pool can offer and that is a huge game changer,” Lessard said. “For me having that new infrastructure is a great way to sell the Town, to let them know what is possible here.”

The new aquatic centre would be approximately 28,000 square feet and built across the street from the Sports Palace.

Baril says the application is nearly complete, and will be reviewed one final time before being submitted to the province before Friday.
