Regional and National News Headlines – November 4

It’s back to basics today in Ontario classrooms.  The Ford governments ban on cell phones and other mobile devices kick starts today.  Under the new rules cell phones will only beallowed for learning under a teacher’s watch or for health or medical purposes and special needs.


We’ll learn today whether educational workers across the province
have voted to accept their new contract.  CUPE will releases the details later this morning.  The last-minute deal with tens of thousands of school employees across the province narrowly averted a strike that would have closed down schools.  In the deal employees received a modest wage increase, no change to sick leave policy and job security.


The federal government may be on the hook for new jets to fly the PM and other VIP’s. It’s because of changing aviation rules in the U.S. and Europe.  Those countries are moving away from radar based air traffic control and replacing it with GPS-based data.  The defence department says because of the age of two of the Challenger jets it doesn’t make sense to replace the equipment so it is looking into other possibilities.  The new air rules come into effect in the New Year.
