Is your vehicle ready for winter – Police offer emergency kit tips

Reality check! That was certainly given to everyone earlier this week with that blanket of white snow in our region. It’s a sign that winter is nearly upon us and soon the snow will soon arrive in regular amounts. Stephanie Belec, community safety officer with the Ontario Provincial Police’s James Bay Detachment says we should start thinking about getting our winter survival kit ready in our cars.\

“People should have jumper cables, a shovel, blankets, snacks like fruit bars, and a flash light,” Belec said. “If you are putting plastic bottles of water in your car you should make sure you replacing them on a regular basis.”

Belec says to leave extra space between your vehicle and the one in front of you.

“That can help prevent a collision,” she said. “You should also remove snow and ice on your motor vehicle to improve visibility. It’s also important to purchase snow tires for your vehicles, as it will improve your traction on the roads.”

Police remind everyone to refrain from calling the 911 Communication Centre for non-emergency issues such as road conditions.
