Two construction projects in our area are one step closer to going ahead. The Province nominated the projects in Smooth Rock Falls and in Kapuskasing for Federal Government funding through the Canada Infrastructure program. Kapuskasing Town Administrator Guylain Baril says this is welcomed news for them.
“Bridge repairs can be very costly so the fact that the Federal and Provincial Governments are putting in up to 80 per cent of the costs is very exciting for us,” he said. “We welcome and looking forward to a positive response from the Federal Government.”
Baril says the project involves the two bridges on the Kap River located West of McPherson Avenue.
“Those bridges still in okay condition but they require some painting, concrete work, and repaving work to be done,” he said.
The total cost of the project is $4.5 million with the Feds giving 50 percent and the province at 33 per cent while Kapuskasing must come up with the remaining balance. Officials in Smooth Rock Falls are looking at fixing up Main and Dupont Streets as well as Kelly Road. The work consists of repaving, new curbs, gutters and sidewalks.
