Carol Hughes – NDP Incumbent
In addition to our FedNor commitment, New Democrats will change EI rules so workers who leave their job for school qualify for EI benefits. We’ll establish national training priorities to expand training options beyond people who qualify for EI. We will help retain families and attract workers in the North with a new tax credit for graduates to work in rural and northern communities. Finally, we will invest in forestry innovation and support value-added Canadian wood products. Our plan will support forestry research and development, help companies commercialize new technologies, and expand markets for wood products to keep Canada competitive.
Heather Wilson – Liberal Party
I have been in business all my career and I know that Northern Ontario has all we need right here to contribute to the national economy through responsible mining, forestry and tourism. When supported appropriately, the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit in AMK will be a game changer not just in Northern Ontario but in Canada and beyond. Reliable investments in Fednor and in apprenticeship and training programs will ensure that organizations in the region have all they need to invest here and create jobs. Goldcorp in Chapleau and Domtar in Espanola is evidence that sound investment keeps jobs in the North and contributes to a sustainable economy.
Dave Williamson – Conservative Party
Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing is a large and diverse riding with unparalleled opportunities for growth and development. A conservative government will continue to build on our economic base which remains the tourism, agricultural, mining and forestry sectors. We will reduce reporting requirements for small and medium sized business and cut costs by eliminating the carbon tax on oil and gasoline. A conservative government will partner with the province and local municipalities to enhance local infrastructure such as the roads and bridges that enable us to access resources such as the Ring of Fire and support the flow of goods and services to larger markets.
Max Chapman – Green Party of Canada
The Green Party will increase employment in Northern Ontario through investments in services, infrastructure, and industry. We will create a “Canadian Sustainable Generations Fund” which will invest in trades, apprenticeships and education required for the transition to a green economy. Upgrading the national energy grid, and retrofitting buildings to be more energy efficient can create 4 million jobs nationwide. We will also create jobs in the North by investing in forestry and value-added manufacturing, agriculture and agri-food, mining innovation, and tourism.
