Police Warn Residents Of Increase Of Internet and Phone Scams

Ontario Provincial Police say there has been an increase in internet and phone fraud recently. Stephanie Belec, the media relations and community safety officer for the James Bay Detachment says the scammers are threatening people to lock their personal computers. Belec there is a way to detect the legitimate companies from the fake ones.

“The legitimate companies will let you call back or you can look them up on the internet and find the phone number and they will let you call them back,” Belec said. “Whenever it’s a fraudster you will feel pressured to provide money or personal information.”

Belec says the fraudulent companies are requesting banking information, or asking people to purchase gift cards to Google or Amazon.  Police add that people need to be vigilant as the fraudsters are always coming up with new tricks to get to get people’s money. Residents are asked to report any unusual activity to police.
