(Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry) The long weekend is here, and the natural resources ministry is urging care with open flames. Forest fire information officer Isabelle Chenard says that as of this afternoon, the forest fire hazard across the Northeast region is high to extreme. “We’re expecting to continue to see sunny conditions throughout the long weekend,” she says, “so we expect everyone to be mindful of safety during the weekend with recreational campfires or any other burning.” “You can look up the rules for outdoor burning during the fire season on Ontario.ca/forestfire and for the latest information with the fire situation in the province of Ontario, you can also follow us on Twitter at onforestfires.” You might also notice a slight smell of smoke from large fires burning in western and northern Canada.
