Heat warning issued for our region

This won’t surprise you:  We are in the middle of what Environment Canada calls “a heat event”.

Meteorologist Gerald Cheng says the heat and humidity should be in place at least through tomorrow (Thursday).

“We want people to be aware of the heat,” he says. “I know that some people have been waiting desperately for this kind of heat because of long and hard winter that we had, but we also have to be careful, especially for the vulnerable population.”

By “vulnerable population”,Cheng means the elderly, the very young, and people with medical conditions.  They should stay in a cool place, stay hydrated and not exercise too vigorously.

This weather event – including a heat warning for Kapuskasing and Hearst– should end on Friday.

“We will see another warm-up early next week, maybe Tuesday or Wednesday or so,” Cheng predicts.  “But it’s very brief.  And after that, I’m looking at seasonal temperatures for the most part, at least for the better part of July.”

Cheng won’t rule out more heat waves in August. Right now, however, the long-range forecast is for near-normal weather.
