Legion Br. 85 leads the way in Canada Day celebrations in Kap

Canada Day celebrations in Kapuskasing are being organized – as they have been for years – by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 85.

Public relations chair Debbie Morin says you’re asked to be at the cenotaph by 10:45 Monday morning.

“And at 11 o’clock we will be having our flag raising,” she notes. “ There’ll be a little parade, not a big shutting down the highway because we’ll be on the side of the cenotaph across from the Legion.”

After the flag raising ceremony, participants are invited to stay for free cake and hot dogs.

Morin says it’s important to the Legionnnaires to lead the way on the country’s birthday.

“We honour and celebrate Canada Day by raising the flag and just celebrating that we’re Canadians,” she remarks. “and we’re free to be and doing what we’re doing here in the community or in Canada, period, and just recognizing it.”

Morin adds that it’s only because of veterans of the two World Wars and the more modern-day wars that we have anything to celebrate.
