Bus service coming to area between Opasatika and Moonbeam

Public transit – a bus – is coming to the area along Highway 11 between Moonbeam and Opasatika this fall.

Alain Robichaud is the economic development officer for Val Rita-Harty and Opasatika.  He says it’s being done with a half-million-dollar contribution from the province, and a target start-up date of early October.

He says it’s hoped that the bus service keeps people in the smaller communities around Kapuskasing, especially the elderly, who are often dependent on other people for routine errands.

“Especially sometimes in the winter months when it’s cold, the roads are not that nice,” he says, “they lost their licence of they don’t have a licence or they don’t own a car, so they’re always depending on somebody else.  Now they’ll have a service to depend on.”

Robichaud says all the logistics have to be worked out, such as scheduling.

“So say on Mondays it would be Opasatika and Val Rita,” he supposes. “Tuesday would be Moonbeam.  The following day would be just in the Kapuskasing area.  Thursday would be back to Opasatika and then Friday back to Moonbeam.  Something like that.”

Public information sessions before the service hits the road will explain all the procedures, including the bus fare.
