Timmins Northstars to reunite, share a lot of old hockey stories

Written By: Bob McIntyre

A reunion is in the works for August 17th, when hockey players who used to toil for the Timmins Northstars get together at the McIntyre Arena.

During their eleven years of existence in the 70s and 80s, the Stars drew players from all over the region and even farther afield.

Steve Kidd was in nets for the final four years of the club.

“We’re attempting to get as many of the players back as possible,” he told a news conference.  “One of our players is in Korea right now and he’s trying to find a way to get here.”

On the evening of August 17th, there is an open house for all supporters and friends.  The admission charge is a voluntary donation to the Timmins Rock junior team.

In their heyday, the Northstars dominated the league that included teams from Iroquois Falls, Kapuskasing, Hearst and others, and did quite well in regional and provincial play, too.

Kidd, the Cochrane boy in  the Stars’ goal, recalls playing in the all-Canadian finals at the Winnipeg Arena.

“Somebody scored on me in double overtime.  It was a 5-on-0, we got caught on a bad change.”

Of course, as goalie, it was all Kidd’s fault.
