Longhorns upcoming season to be part-time, focus being put on local soccer

The travelling soccer club out of Kapuskasing is going to be on a part time basis this year, for the betterment of local soccer.

The Longhorns Football Club is cutting its schedule of games down to a partial schedule says club member Justin Renaud, he says they will be playing part-time in the Timmins Men’s Soccer League, with the purpose being to cut down travel time and give local area residents a chance to play more of the game itself.

Renaud says a part of the decision came from having traveled upwards of a dozen times each and every one of the past 15 years in order to compete within the league. Whereas this year, they also realize there are a decent number of interested players locally, so they have made the conscientious move to try and create more opportunities to play in town.

He says they are looking for any type of skill level to come out and compete, because he wants to be clear that this is not geared as a competitive tryout for the Longhorns, rather this is a chance for players to come out and enjoy themselves. He says it’s a way to stay in shape, have fun and also encourage the game in our local community, albeit they are not trying to create a co-op league at this time, so Renaud says currently they are only seeking males.

Renaud mentions the pickup games will be rather informal.

“In terms of organization its not like there’s going to be ref’s or anything, it’ll be kind of whoever shows up will make teams based on however many players show up and go from there.”

He says ideally it be a weekly pickup game on Thursday nights that could stretch towards twice a week on Thursdays and Sundays if the interest is there. Renaud says he is not too worried about numbers saying they will play five-a-side if they get ten players and sort of work from there.

As for equipment, he says just a regular pair of soccer cleats and ideally a pair of shin pads and soccer socks would be ideal for a player, while the cost will most likely be between five to $10.

He also says there is the possibility that the season could last right through the summer if the interest is there.

“I could see this continuing as long as there’s interest right? So right into August, right into September as long as the weather is nice so, as long as there is interest then I think the possibility to play will be there.”

The Kap Men’s Soccer begins this Thursday at the Kapuskasing District High School field.
