Kapuskasing taking in nearly 750 evacuees following forest fire

The remaining evacuees that will be headed to Kapuskasing from Pikangikum are on their way.

General manager of protective services Pat Kennedy says after receiving 198 evacuees last night, another 690 will be making their way into the area today. However, only 550 will be headed to Kapuskasing.

Kennedy says 140 will be headed directly to Smooth Rock Falls, with the remaining being divided between motel space and sleeping group lodging at the Arena/Curling Club.

He says as more motel rooms become available, they will reduce the amount of evacuees being housed in the lodging, but at no point will they be able to place all evacuees in motels.

The First Nation of Pikangikum is fleeing two forest fires nearby their community. Yesterday 160 evacuees landed in the city of Timmins, with another 225 headed to Cochrane.

Kennedy says by this evening they expect to have 748 evacuees sleeping in Kapuskasing.
