Why not to be complacent about Lyme disease found in Sudbury area

Written By: Bob McIntyre

A tick carrying the bacteria that can cause Lyme disease in humans has been found in the Sudbury area.

Environmental support officer Ashley Derocchis of Public Health Sudbury and Districts tells us why that should concern us, here in our neck of the woods.

“Because black-legged ticks do travel on migratory birds, they can be found anywhere and so we are reminding the public to take proper precautions to protect themselves against Lyme disease,” she advises.

We are in the prime season to encounter ticks.

“Ticks are dormant throughout the winter,” says Derocchis.  “So within the spring, we do see some ticks arriving.  The season is typically known as the spring/summer months and it can also go into the fall months as well.”

If you’re bitten by a tick, you’ll notice a rash with a bullseye mark at the site of the bite.

Lyme disease can cause flu symptoms, and if not treated early enough, problems with the heart, joints and nervous system.
