Popular jackleg drilling competition back at Canadian Mining Expo

Written By: Bob McIntyre

The annual Canadian Mining Expo at the McIntyre Community Building in Schumacher is so big, it’s commonly known as “the Big Event”.

And you have a chance to see a competition there on Wednesday, June 5th, demonstrating jackleg drilling.

Frank Giorno handles communications for all the events surrounding the Expo.

“It’s one that highlights one of the basic skills in mining,” he says. “That is drilling into solid rock for the placement of explosives, so you can get the ore ready to be scooped up and sent over to the mill for milling.”

Mayors from our region and other celebrities have their own category,as do women who don’t work in mining, and professional drillers of both genders.

“Specifically, the event takes place just north of the McIntyre Curling Rink,” says Giorno.  It is near a tepee that is part of a pavilion outlining indigenous partnerships with the industry.
