Northern Edge one of six winners at young entrepreneur event

That Northern Edge is returning from down south with a new piece of hardware.

Kapuskasing resident Brock Babin, a Grade 12 High School Senior at École Secondaire Publique Écho du Nord, is also the owner of Northern Edge which produces laser engraved artwork.

Babin most recently was announced as one of the six winners of this year’s young entrepreneur; make your pitch competition, after already finding his way into the top 20 when he last spoke to MyKapuskasingNow.com.

He says out of the 180 entries he was one of the top 20 picked to have an all expenses trip to Toronto, which was just the beginning of a whirlwind weekend for him.

Babin says from the moment he arrived it was one thing to the next, pitching, rehearsing, pitching, and rehearsing over and over.

“It was an awesome experience and on the Sunday, starting from 3 until 9:00pm we had boot camp, so constant training with CEO’s of bigger companies and corporations, how to not be nervous when you pitch, what to focus on in your pitch.”

He says being on stage was its own nerve-racking experience, standing infront of big time corporation CEO’s and also hundreds of audience members made for an experience he won’t soon forget.

“Once I got on stage I was super nervous, looking out at the panel of judges and they are high-end names for people in Toronto, and having them look in front of you plus an audience and your pitching your business is nerve-racking for sure, but setting your nerves aside after that it was awesome.”

Babin says he soaked in all the feedback that he could from each and every CEO that was willing to share with him. He says he was congratulated for his early success of reaching already a 1,000 sales, and then turned onto the idea of the marketplace available for his work within the Toronto area.

Babin immediately was intrigued by this, considering that his main ask during his pitch was to try and expand his business beyond the north. Therefore, he says he has reached out already to a few CEO’s from the panel who has offered him help and advice to start getting his product in stores down south.

“They also mentioned that the stuff that I made, my product the wooden signs, was nothing that you can find in Toronto, it’s almost impossible to find and they said that it’s a huge marketplace up here and I got a few networking opportunities with some of the CEO’s and corporations to possibly have some work done and some jobs to do over there as well.”

Before he finishes his year of school Babin will also be joining students at the Enterprise Olympics May 28th and 29th in Thunder Bay as part of Head Start in Business.

Despite the wonderful success from the competition, Babin still has his sights set on heading to St. Catherine’s to attend Brock University taking Business Administration beginning this fall.
