Indigenous People’s Day gets go ahead to use the Circle

An earlier request to use the Circle in Kapuskasing for a second straight year has been approved.

The Kapuskasing Indigenous Peoples Day Summer Solstice Celebrations will have their celebration take place once again in the Circle for 2019.

The National Indigenous Peoples Day Planning Committee originally proposed that the event take place June 21st from 1:00pm to 8:00pm considering the circle represents the heart of the town, and is a sacred symbol for Indigenous people.

Originally the request was to be given a secondary option of Riverside Park; however after meetings and discussions between both sides, an agreement has come to light.

The end result is a decision to allow the Circle to be used from 1:00pm until 6:00pm and following the event it will be re-opened to help with traffic involving the St. Jean festival taking place the same weekend.

Council has also come to an agreement alongside the event committee, Protective Services, the Public Works Department, the NIPDPC, as well as local businesses and organizations to have a section of Cain Street closed off for vendors or booths.

The National Indigenous Peoples Day event is to take place on June 21st in Kapuskasing.
