Cochrane polar bears back on camera

Written By: Bob McIntyre

Your daily fix of live polar bear video is back.

After being out of commission since before Christmas, the web cameras at the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat are back on line.

Executive director Michael Honeth says the cameras serve two purposes.  The first is critical, allowing bear keepers to track the five marine mammals on a minute-by-minute basis.

“We keep very detailed records of what the bears are doing and the cams allow us to track that,” he explains.

And then there’s the rest of us.

“We have thousands of people that come to our website every month,” according to Honeth. “And when the cameras went down, we got instant overload of messages from people who were concerned or who wanted to know what was going on.”

The Habitat’s recently re-designed website now offers access to the web cams from every page.
