Scam artists operate in small towns, too

It goes against the values of any small Northern town, but provincial police are warning against being trusting of strangers who appear to need help.

Recently, a woman has been knocking on doors in Cochrane asking, for example, to use the washroom.  While she’s in the house, she helps herself to some of the owner’s valuables.“And criminals can possibly target people that might be kind or giving and want to be helpful as well,” she adds.  “If someone is asking to use the washroom or anything like that, be mindful that this could be a tactic to steal your belongings.”

Belec’s advice: Keep your car locked, keep outside property locked in a shed, and don’t let a stranger into your house.
