Kapuskasing is on the cusp of setting a record that its snow-fatigued residents would rather ignore.
Environment Canada meteorologist Marie-Eve Giguere says there’s another dumping of snow headed our way… overnight Thursday. Already, Kapuskasing Airport has 97 cm on the ground since the beginning of the season – that’s within striking distance of the record.
“It’s 99 cm on the ground,” Giguere explains. “That was in 1967. So we’re looking at a very snowy year, actually.”
It’s still early to tell, but Giguere says the Thursday snow event could give the region up to 25 centimetres of new snow.
“It originates in Colorado and then tracks right across about Sault Ste. Marie, so it leaves you guys again on the cold side, snowy side, and we’re looking at another significant accumulation in the night of Thursday into Friday morning.”
That follows on the heels of the Monday-into-Tuesday storm. It dropped anywhere from 20-35 cm on the region east of Wawa, which itself recorded 37 centimetres.
Areas south of the low-pressure system got rain, some freezing precipitation and double-digit temperatures on the plus side.
