Alternative Education Centre – There’s More Than One Way!

Have you ever felt like mainstream education just isn’t right for you? At the Alternative Education Centre in Kapuskasing they understand every student learns differently! Instead of offering the cookie cutter education method, the Centre gears their approach towards the specific needs of each student. Providing a quality education for over 30 years, AEC works with you, not past you! Whether you’re a teen who finds it difficult to learn in the usual context of a high school, or you’re looking to return and finish your education after a few (or several) years.

At the Alternative Education Centre, they give you the freedom to work at your own pace! AEC offers a relaxed experience where you’ll have the option of learning in a class environment or at home, providing one-on-one help any time you need it from dedicated instructors. The only restriction is any and all of your evaluations with AEC must be completed on site.

Registration!

Attending the Alternative Education Centre is easy! There’s no appointment necessary, all you need to do is walk-in! You’ll start by filling out a basic registration form and sitting down with the Program Coordinator to discuss your short-term and long-term goals. You’ll then go through an initial assessment in English (or French) to identify an appropriate starting point as a student, and if needed, general assessments for Math, Science and Social Science. Once you’ve gone through these few short steps you’ll be well on your way!

Courses!

At the Alternative Education Centre they offer a variety of courses and options to help you accomplish your short term and long term goals! Including:

  • Credit courses for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma in a variety of subjects from Grade 9-12.
  • A Literacy and Numeracy program from Employment Ontario for adult learners upgrading their skills to successfully complete Grade 11 and 12 credit courses.
  • A one-on-one program for Anglophones wishing to learn basic conversational French.
  • Carpentry and welding courses for people looking to learn the trade or hone their skills.
  • Basic computer modules from setting up an email account, to surfing the web safely, and working on Word documents.

While the Alternative Education Centre covers the same expectations as a regular course in the classroom and helps you receive credit towards your OSSD, they also offer Co-op placements. This option gives you the opportunity to gain work experience while earning academic credit!
