Council Will Discuss Further Regarding Use Of Circle For Indigenous Peoples Day

A request to use the Circle in Kapuskasing for a second straight year is going to get a further look from the town.

The Kapuskasing Indigenous Peoples Day Summer Solstice Celebrations were hoping to have their celebration take place once again in the Circle.

The National Indigenous Peoples Day Planning Committee proposed that the event take place June 21st from 1:00pm to 8:00pm in the Circle considering it represents the heart of the town, and the circle is a sacred symbol for Indigenous people.

The NIPDPC say that this is the best way to share and celebrate their teachings with the community of Kapuskasing.

Originally the request was to be denied with a secondary option offered of having the event take place at Riverside Park.

However, after hearing from members of the local Indigenous community who arrived at council to speak on behalf of their celebration, Chief of Recreation and Health Sebastien Lessard decided to disagree with the recommendation and offer substitute request.

The end result was a decision from Lessard to defer the issue until a later council and to instead plan a meeting to be held with the event committee, Protective Services, the Public Works Department, the NIPDPC, as well as local businesses and organizations.

The National Indigenous Peoples Day event is to take place nationally on June 21st and the next council meeting is set for February 4th.
