Giroux To Have Number 28 Retired By Former QMJHL Club

One of Hearst’s very own is being recognized for his unforgettable time in Gatineau.

Claude Giroux will see his number 28 raised to the rafters of Robert-Guertin Center in Gatineau, Quebec on February 20th in a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League matchup versus the visiting Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.

Claude Larose Arena Parks and Recreation Director Guy Losier says Giroux’s accomplishments only further the pride the town has for their special son.

“We are very proud of him and the thing is the kid’s are also. It is Claude Giroux ice surface, we got a big picture of him in the arena here. So I’m sure that some kids may dream of being like Claude or following Claude’s footsteps.”

Losier says part of their pride regarding Giroux is the fact that he continues to give back to his community in every way possible.

“He’s always ready to help out in any way, shape or form in the community. So definitely we know how involved he gets in the community and he’s also the ambassador of the Hospital Foundation, his presence is always felt here in Hearst.”

Giroux spent three seasons with the Olympiques after arriving as an undrafted member who walked on to the club.

He wore the number 28 for all three seasons from 2005 through 2008 scoring 125 goals, 196 assists for a total of 321 points in just 187 regular season games.

The Hearst, Ontario native also collected an amazing 78 points, 24 of which were goals in just 41 playoff games in his Major Junior Career.

Along with his personal accomplishments, Giroux led the Olympiques to the President’s Cup in 2008 to cap-off his incredible QMJHL career.

He will become the tenth player in the team’s history to have his number retired joining the likes of Luc Robitaille, Jose Theodore and Maxime Talbot.
