Few people who grew up in our region would remember a time when Cochrane didn’t have a Chimo Winter Carnival.

Jessie Burton is the chair of this year’s event, keeping the tradition alive.

“Myself and a group of very hard working volunteers,” she quickly and modestly interjects.

Burton says all of those volunteers work like crazy all year long.

Most of the old favourite events will be back this year, such as the demolition derby, the torchlight parade and, of course, Burton says,  the polar bear dip on Lake Commando

“We hear every year that the one thing that we are lacking are activities for younger kids on the lake,” Burton notes. “ So we’re looking into some different kinds of games, like carnival games.”

Also back this year, on the second Saturday of the carnival, is the carnival dance.

“We used to have it on the lake in a tent,” Burton says. “But now that we have a beautiful new pavilion down there, we will host it inside, just like last year.

The carnival starts Feb. 8h and runs right through until Family Day,  Feb. 18.
