BIG MONTH FOR ALZHEIMER SOCIETY

A flag-raising in front of City Hall Monday afternoon will officially launch Alzheimer Awareness Month for the Timmins-Porcupine branch of the Alzheimer Society.  It serves the area from the Tri-Towns to Hearst.

Tracy Koskamp-Bergeron is executive director.

“Every year, we build on the previous year,” she says, “(providing) information and we try to talk about different hot topics around Alzheimer’s Disease.  In the past couple of years, we’ve been talking about stigma and reducing stigma and ways that you can help and support those in your community.”

One highlight of the month is expected to be a grand re-opening.

The office serves the region from the Tri-Towns to Hearst. It recently moved into a new location on the lower level of the 101 Mall in Timmins.  Koskamp-Bergeron says it provides easier access for clients.

“We have always somebody here to provide information and then to direct them into the right path for whatever information they’re looking for, whether it’s support or education for themselves or for their family.”

The space is twice as big as the previous one, so Koskamp-Bergeron hopes to expand services and programs.
