New Snowmobiling Project Hoping To Increase Tourism

Kapuskasing wants to showcase to the country what their winter fun looks like.

Council tonight made a decision to support the World’s Best Snowmobiling Destination project by agreeing to supply $3,000 over three years to help build a snowmobile destination to increase tourism spending in the region.

Mayor Dave Plourde says the decision helps to continue to improve their draw for tourists.

“This allows us to be on the map for a destination for snowmobilers and I mean its a real easy one to participate in and I think that is something that has probably been lacking maybe from our part for sometime and I think that we are always encouraged to see more investment in that and see more people come to our community and visit the great community that we have.”

Plourde says the town is already a known hotspot for riders, so why not push it forward.

“It probably is and I think it is one that we are known for throughout Ontario as a destination for snowmobilers so I think that is just a logical choice for us to participate in it, to not participate in it would be a silly move on our part.”

The decision will see Kapuskasing possibly join communities throughout the Highway 11 corridor who have also been invited to join the project such as Cochrane, Timmins and Hearst.

Snowmobiling across Northeastern Ontario currently brings in $22.9 million annually according to Destination Northern Ontario.
