FONOM Behind New Provincial Strategy For Forestry

One Northern group is showing support for a recent provincial strategy to benefit the forestry industry.

The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities says they are pleased with the recent announcement by the province of plans to reduce limitations and increase the competitiveness within the industry.

Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry Jeff Yurek says the Ontario government will hold nine round table sessions over the coming months to gain input from the forestry industry, municipal leaders and Indigenous communities.

FONOM President Danny Whalen says they are pleased with the government taking on this initiative to ensure the forest sector remains competitive.

Whalen says they need to ensure the sector can be competitive through the reduction of excessive rules, while also operating under high standards.

He also says former President and Kapuskasing Mayor Alan Spacek will be the representative within the initiative for the group.

The first of the round table discussions takes place in November in Sault Ste. Marie.
