MPP Seeks Government Help For Northern School

The closure of a Kashechewan school is not slipping past one northern leader.

Mushkegowuk-James Bay MPP Guy Bourgouin spoke at Queen’s Park Thursday regarding the closure of a Kashechewan school due to dangerous conditions.

Bourgouin says while Doug Ford obsesses over Toronto, communities such as Kashechewan have suffered immense losses, such as having to put a halt to education due to a lack of safe resources.

He then asked why Toronto’s election is seemingly more important than having safe schools for kids across the province.

“What tops the list of concerns for my constituents is making sure their children don’t lose an entire school year because their school is falling apart, why is violating Toronto’s charter of rights a higher priority than getting the kids of Kashechewan into a safe school they can learn in?”

Bourgouin then plugged the premier for why he sees more importance in Toronto issues, than the rest of the province.

“Does the Premier believe that trampling on the charter of rights of Torontonians’ is a more urgent issue than making sure the children of Kashechewan have a safe school to attend?”

Doug Ford’s Conservative government recently took the step of invoking the notwithstanding clause, which many believe is due to their overwhelming interest in the Toronto elections.

Bourgouin meanwhile, says he will continue to push the government so these Kashechewan children do not lose an entire school year due to these ongoing issues.
