Demonstration Farm Sees New Owner

Council has accepted an $850,000 tender from Rogers Crop Enterprises Inc. in regards to the Kapuskasing Demonstration Farm.

At a special council meeting it was recommended that they accept the tender and authorize current CAO Guylain Baril to execute a lease agreement on behalf of the Kapuskasing Economic Development Corporation.

The town at this time must relinquish control over executing the lease to their CAO in order to finalize the deal, considering council and current Mayor Alan Spacek are not allowed to spend large sums of cash during the municipal election period.

Spacek spoke of the same scenario when regarding the authorization of Baril to approve any expenditure with their Smart Energy Savings Project almost two weeks ago.

Baril has said he sees the choice as a positive one for the future of the farm.

Currently, the Demonstration Farm has been without a tenant since the former Andrew Gordanier handed in an early termination notice in mid-April.

Back in April, Baril said the town would look to try and find a new tenant who could fill the remaining two years on the lease and follow through with the eventual purchase of the farm.

At the end of the lease, Rogers Crop Enterprise will have the opportunity to purchase the farm for their tendered price.
