DSB ONE has made itself heard regarding their concerns with revisions to the sex-ed curriculum.
The District School Board Ontario North East released a statement regarding the changes to the Health and Physical Education curriculum saying they believe the government should begin discussions with school boards and teachers immediately.
Chair of the Board Bob Brush says the Minister of Education must clarify her expectations for the curriculum prior to the start of the new school year this September.
He says it is critical that the focus on student’s health and wellness be maintained.
Brush also says that their students need the knowledge and understanding of current day realities, such as the importance of their online presence as well as how to handle situations such as cyberbullying.
He also says they believe the former 1998 curriculum did not consider consent and knowledge of the body as a way to keep students safe, something they want to see continue.
Premier Doug Ford promised in his election campaign to replace the sex-ed curriculum with a new and improved version following more consultation with parents.
Since, Ford has since stated that the switch to the 1998 lesson plan is to be a temporary switch only until consultations with parents province wide have been completed.
