Town Prepping For Improvements To SES Project

The town has prepared itself for further improvements during the lull of the municipal election period.

Council has agreed upon authorizing CAO Guylain Baril to approve any expenditures to the limit of $50,000 when it comes to minor improvements regarding their Smart Energy project at the Sports Palace Arena.

The town’s project to take the Sports Palace almost completely off the grid began back in 2015.

At that time former CAO Yves Labelle said the project would look to not only save huge on hydro costs but make ice production and arena heating more efficient.

Since, reports show that in the first full year of SES, November of 2017 until April 2018, it failed to deliver the expected savings.

Rather, total energy use actually increased by 13 per cent instead of the promised reduction of 33 per cent.

Mayor Alan Spacek says these minor improvements should increase the overall system’s success as well as the comfort of those using the arena and increase energy reduction.

Spacek says there are necessary improvements that need to be done and waiting through the municipal election period was not an option.

Despite this increase in energy use, the system has still managed to reduce operating costs by $58,000 since its introduction.
