New Project Looks To Revamp Northern Farmland Back Into Business

Smooth Rock Falls and Val Rita are part of a new project looking to bring more northern farmland back into business.

The Northeast Community Network, a local not-for-profit organization, has put together a two-year initiative titled Private Agricultural Land Assembly Project.

The project will see owners of usable land not currently being put to use contacted regarding the land’s availability.

NeCN Chairperson Antoine Vezina says the Timmins Economic Development Corporation has funded them $100,000 towards the project.

Vezina says the hope is more producers from Southern Ontario or Western Canada will make the move over for farming opportunities.

He says for this project the focus will be on the Cochrane District including Val Rita and Smooth Rock Falls.

Once land is ready to be sold, NeCN will put together a property list that will become available as well as information sessions to inform possible landowners.
