DSB ONE Balances Budget For Upcoming School Year

One school board has announced it has balanced its budget heading into the new school year.

District School Board Ontario North East says heading into the 2018-2019 school year it will have a balanced budget, with a slight surplus. DSB One says it has been in a deficit for the past few years, so it is very happy to be in the black. This year the school board has approved an operating budget of $128,265,644 and a capital budget of $10,644,973.

It says this year’s budget highlights three major parts of the board’s strategic plan including equity, culture and innovation.

Part of the budget this year will go into updating and continuing the ipad programs for grades three through 12. The program will continue for grades three and four, new ipads will be provided for all grade five students and teachers and the technology will be refreshed for grade nine students in September.

It says it will also be addressing shortfalls in Special Education and Mental Health, as well as hiring more Youth and Early Childhood Educators. The Ministry of Education has also promised to support grade seven and eight students engage in career and pathways planning. It will also allocate 126 Education Assistants where needed.

The school board is expecting a drop in enrollment this year because of the current trends. It says it is projecting to have 6,417 students in the fall.

DSB One says the next step of the budget process is sending the final copy to the Ministry of Education.
