PHU Says Northern Whooping Cough Outbreak Not Yet An Issue In Kapuskasing

The whooping cough disease is spreading around Northern Ontario, but the Porcupine Health Unit says there is no current threat to the Kapuskasing area.

Currently areas around Powassan are seeing a whooping cough outbreak.

The heath unit says if you are doing any traveling to the area, or have people visiting, you should make sure you have all your vaccinations up to date.

Public Health Nurse Dominique Mongeon says whooping cough is easily spread so making sure your vaccinations are all good is the best way to protect yourself.

Mongeon says the Kapuskasing area typically sees about two to three cases reported every year. She says the disease typically starts as a regular cough.

Mongeon say if you think you have these symptoms, you should talk to a doctor. She says if an outbreak were to happen, PHU would send out a notice.
