National Indigenous Day To Be Celebrated In The Centre Of Town

Thursday will see a celebration like none other before it in Kapuskasing.

According to Kapuskasing Indian Friendship Centre Worker Marcia Chum, for the first time, the centre will celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day in a new setting, the Circle.

Chum says the day is to celebrate and open the culture up to others.

She says it is to also celebrate how far the culture has come over the years, as well as recognize indigenous culture’s strength and unity.

Chum says the circle will be shut-off to traffic, but businesses will still be running.

She says putting the event right in the middle of the community is in hopes of getting more involvement.

Chum also says there will be lots of activities throughout the day.

Kapuskasing Town Council agreed at a previous meeting in late May to allow the Centre to use Circle Street and close it off to traffic from 8:30am to 9:00pm with volunteers posted at each intersection leading to assist with traffic and parking.

The celebration kicks off at 1:00pm in the Circle in Kapuskasing this Thursday.
