Hughes Says Northerners Should Keep Close Eye Out For Ticks

Carol Hughes says as the summer nears, the issue of Lyme disease should be a focus for Northerners.

That’s according to the Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP, who says in 2016 Stats Canada calculated that Ontario had over 350 confirmed cases of Lyme disease.

Hughes says Lyme Hope, a Canadian advocacy program, is looking to improve education and overall knowledge of the disease through lobbying the government.

She says anyone heading out to the bush should be aware of ticks.

Hughes says many Canadians are suffering, but improved access to treatment and education would be a big help.

Lyme Hope is pushing for access to: appropriate testing, healthcare professionals, patient-centered treatment and free care supplied by the federal government for all Canadians.
