Too many people across Northeastern Ontario rely on the Weather Network for accurate information.

That’s according to Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes who says the idea of removing the network from the basic cable package would be devastating to Northerners.

Hughes, who spoke to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, says many seniors are uncomfortable with the internet and northern communities are dependent upon travel with their own vehicles.

She says the weather network is something everyone uses, but through multiple platforms.

Hughes says the CRTC has brought forward the idea as they do an overview of their basic cable packages.

So far, she has been the only MP to speak in support of keeping the Weather Network on basic cable, but says over 30 MP’s have now written the CRTC on the matter.
