NDP MP’s Push For Papal Apology Regarding Residential Schools

A Northern MP has asked the Pope to apologize for the Catholic Church’s role in residential schools.

Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus has spearheaded the motion at Queen’s Park, after creating the motion with the input of Crown Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett.

Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes says to this point there has been steps made such as a residential school apology and a truth and reconciliation report.

Hughes says the report itself clearly recommends asking for a papal apology.

She says it is a great move to invite the Pope to come make amends.

The motion failed to gain unanimous consent last week after a Conservative MP’s vote against it, now, the motion will go up for full debate and vote this week in the House of Commons.
