Hughes Says Changes To Fisheries Act Is Best Way To Increase Protection

The NDP’s Carol Hughes says Bill C-68 will better protect fish and their habitats.

The Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP says bill to amend the fisheries act will reverse changes to legislation that was put in place by the Conservative government under Stephen Harper.

Hughes says the changes proposed in the bill would improve the protection of fisheries through further measures and regulations.

She says this is a move in the right direction for Northern Ontarians and fishermen.

Hughes says some of these changes proposed include redefining fisheries to include all fish.

The bill was adopted for a second reading this past Monday in the House of Commons and has not yet been sent to committee for consideration.
