Kashechewan Evacuees Begin Arriving In Kapuskasing

150 evacuees are being flown in to Kapuskasing today from Kashechewan.

According to Fire Chief and General Manager of Protective Services Pat Kennedy, a risk of flooding on the Albany River has put Kashechewan into a state of emergency.

Kennedy says stage one evacuees or vulnerable residents will start being flown in from the remote First Nation community.

He says Kapuskasing is prepared to accommodate more evacuees than they are used too.

Kennedy also says despite still hosting roughly 30 evacuees from Fort Albany First Nation, they are prepared to handle the influx.

Flights began this morning, as it is expected there will be up to 1,700 residents evacuated over the course of the weekend to places such as Kapuskasing and other host communities.
