Cochrane Looks For Feedback Regarding Implementation Of Hotel Tax

Cochrane is looking to put a new municipal power to use when it comes to hotels.

The town will be holding a presentation and input session to gain feedback from the community regarding Municipal Transient Accommodation Tax, or simply Hotel Tax.

The 2017 provincial budget gave power to single-tier and lower-tier municipalities to apply a new sales tax to the current 13 per cent Harmonized Sales Tax or HST.

Municipalities such as Cochrane that choose to adopt the tax will see at least 50 per cent of the hotel tax revenue shared between a respective regional tourism organization and a not-for-profit tourism organization.

The Greater Toronto Hotel Association has been heavily opposed to the new sales tax and has stated in the past year that imposing this tax with no cap has the potential to raise hotel room taxes to a new high.

Moose News reached out to Mayor Peter Politis for comment but did not hear back by the time of publishing.

The session takes place at the Tim Hortons Event Centre beginning at 6:00pm Wednesday, May 2nd.
