Hearst is aiming to improve its community through innovation.

The town will be handing in its final application tomorrow for the Smart Cities Challenge, a pan-Canadian competition open to municipalities, regional governments and Indigenous communities.

Hearst Mayor Roger Sigouin detailed the competition on the town’s Facebook page explaining that this provides the town a chance to improve their quality of life through the sharing of ideas and projects.

Sigouin says the three question application asked about the biggest challenge in the community, how data and technology is used by members and finally what should be the aim of their smart cities proposal.

The top prize is $50 million, which is open to any community regardless of population, there are two second prizes up to $10 million for populations under 500,000 and also a third prize of up to $5 million for communities under 30,000 people.
